Seeing the Future Clearly: Callies Design on Trust, Style, and the Endless Possibilities of Aviation Glass
Aircraft interiors are undergoing an exciting transformation, driven by innovation and the rising expectations of travelers. As a leader in bespoke cabin projects, Pavina Callies-Papé of Callies Design shares her perspective on shaping the future of interiors, blending aesthetics, practicality, and sustainability.
Callies Design sees today’s innovation as refining what passengers already love. “Innovation in this industry isn’t about reinventing the wheel,” Pavina explains. “Passengers want enhancements, better sound, improved air systems, and lightweight materials. All seamlessly integrated into the cabin. The goal is to create calming spaces where technology quietly supports passenger comfort without overwhelming the senses.” For Callies, staying ahead of the game means keeping up with the latest advancements, including lightweight and impact-resistant aviation glass. “We rely on professional networks and articles in our field to explore solutions like AviationGlass™, which offers durability and design flexibility,” they share.
The garden of inspiration
“My inspirations come from a variety of sources,” Pavina shares. “I have a deep appreciation for art and craftsmanship, and I enjoy merging different influences into cohesive ideas. Inspiration can come from something as intricate as the texture of a textile or the unique pattern of a seashell. For me, knowing the story you want to tell guides what you observe. “Sometimes, though, inspiration comes from the unexpected, so I never stop looking around. Traveling to new places, reading specialized magazines, and taking photographs help me cultivate what I like to call my ‘garden of inspiration.’ It’s a continuous process of observation and curiosity.”
Meeting Client Needs with Innovation
Customer demands highlight the complexity of modern air travel. “Staying ahead in this field means keeping up with the latest advancements, including lightweight and impact-resistant aviation glass,” says Pavina. “We rely on professional networks and industry articles to explore solutions like AviationGlass™, which offers durability and design flexibility,” Pavina notes that client needs often reflect the complexity of modern air travel. “Today’s customers prioritize intuitive layouts, crew efficiency, and premium sound quality. This is where innovations like scratch-resistant glass and acoustic panels can make a difference.” Bringing these ideas to life requires close collaboration between designers, suppliers, and completion centers. “It’s a team effort. Designers bring the vision, suppliers provide technical expertise, and completion centers balance cost and feasibility,” Pavine explains. AviationGlass™ products, such as custom mirrors or glass partitions, combine practicality with stunning design, making them a go-to choice for high-end projects
Favorite Project Memories
Reflecting on her career, Pavina recalls one project in particular. “My favorite project was designing a Boeing 787 for a Head of State. This aircraft was among the first VVIP Dreamliners ever delivered, making it a landmark project in many ways.
“What made it truly special, however, was the incredible team I had the privilege of working with. Leading the design for this project was an unforgettable experience that marked a significant milestone in my career.”
Shaping the Future of Aircraft Interiors
Pavina is also excited about the future potential of glass in design. “I’d love to explore more unique applications, like illuminated table lamps, intricate sconces, or elegant tabletops. Despite challenges like tight timelines and high sampling costs, I’m optimistic about how glass can elevate interiors further.” Looking ahead, larger aircraft are becoming a canvas for innovation. “There’s growing demand for using glass in exciting ways, like bulkhead displays or lavatory mirrors. It’s an opportunity for products like scratch-resistant aviation glass to merge functionality with stunning design.” “The beauty of this industry,” Pavina concludes, “is in the details. It’s the materials, the craftsmanship, and the partnerships that make every cabin unique. Collaborating with innovative suppliers like AviationGlass™ & Technology allows us to push boundaries and design spaces that truly soar.”
